Melatonin & Sleep Onset
Melatonin is the best-known ingredient in Sleepem's formula. Here's what the research on it actually shows.
What It Is
Melatonin is a hormone your body naturally produces in response to darkness, signaling to your internal clock that it's time to prepare for sleep.
What The Research Shows
Melatonin supplementation is fairly well-studied for reducing the time it takes to fall asleep (sleep onset latency), particularly for circadian rhythm disruptions like jet lag or shift work.
What It's Less Clearly Shown To Do
Evidence for melatonin improving overall sleep quality or duration, beyond onset speed, is more mixed than its reputation suggests.
Dosing Matters
Research generally supports lower doses (0.5-3mg) being as effective as higher doses for onset, with higher doses not necessarily providing added benefit and potentially increasing grogginess for some users.
An Honest Caveat
Sleepem's exact melatonin dose is not stated in the materials we reviewed for this site, so direct comparison to specific research doses isn't possible.
