St. John's Wort & Interactions
St. John's Wort is one of the more pharmacologically active ingredients in Sleepem's formula, and it deserves real attention before you start.
What It Is
St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a flowering plant traditionally used for mood support, and it's one of the more well-studied herbal supplements for its drug interaction profile specifically.
Why It's Different From A Gentle Botanical
St. John's Wort induces liver enzymes (specifically CYP3A4) that metabolize a wide range of prescription medications. This can make those medications less effective at their normal dose, including hormonal birth control, blood thinners like warfarin, and certain antidepressants.
The Serotonin Syndrome Consideration
Sleepem's formula also includes 5-HTP and L-Tryptophan, both serotonin precursors. Combined with St. John's Wort's own serotonergic activity, taking this formula alongside an SSRI, SNRI, or MAOI antidepressant carries a real risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially serious condition.
What To Do About It
If you take any prescription medication, talk to your doctor before starting Sleepem. This is especially important for antidepressants, blood thinners, and hormonal contraceptives.
